There are just some weapons that lend themselves well to some modern day shooting. The guns that are mechanically excellent, but externally aren't so pristine that it would be a tragedy if the stock was scratched. This original 2nd Model Maynard is the perfect example of one such weapon. While it may not be a beauty queen, it has a near mint bore and a great lock up.
This Maynard is in great shape overall. The hammer holds solid on both full and half cock, and the barrel locks up tight when the action is closed. The butt stock was refinished and some point and there are some areas near the wrist where a modern epoxies resins were used as wood filler. While this may not be the most attractive repair, it is extremely sound and should hold up to a lot of abuse.
The receiver is in nice shape with minimal pitting. The flash hole is nice and small - not burn out like many other carbines. The barrel has some areas of external pitting here and there, but the bore is just about mint; meaning this carbine would make for a fantastic shooter. The rear sight is original and missing the 500 yd leaf. The front sight is a reproduction.
