This M1841 is one of those rare pieces that will appeal to shooters, reenactors, and collectors. This original Whitney Mississippi rifle is in great shape and features a Hoyt-lined barrel.
The stock is very good with no cracks or major chips. A pair of inspector's cartouches are still very visible on the lock panel. The only flaw worth mentioning is a small area in the tang mortise where some additional walnut was spliced in after the breech plug was replaced (see pictures).
The lock is a '53 dated Whitney with nice, legible markings and no pitting. The action of the hammer holds solid on both full and half cock.
The barrel is original and full length. The breech has some minor "salt and pepper" pitting with a good VP and Eagle stamp. Both front and rear sights are replacements made by Rich Cross; meaning they are full machined and of the highest quality. The breech plug was replaced at some point and was professionally installed by Bob Hoyt, insuring a tight seal. The bore was also relined by Hoyt and as such the rifling is perfect with no rust or pitting.
The furniture is all original with the exception of the swivels, which are reproductions.
