Description
The Austrian M1851 Cavalry Carbine was imported by both sides of the American Civil War. These handy little carbines feature a .75 caliber rifled bore; making them among the largest caliber small arms ever issued during the conflict. Guns larger than .69 caliber were scarce enough, that Brigadier-General James William Denver wrote at one point that “the Austrian carbine” was “found inefficient”; as the paper cartridges issued for them were too small. As a result, the M1851 Austrian carbine received an unfair reputation for being inaccurate and unreliable.
The M1851 was originally built using the "Austrian tube lock" these interesting locks were almost a hybrid of the flintlock and percussion lock, as they featured a percussion-style hammer with an external plunger spring similar to a flintlock's frizzen spring. The weapon was fired with percussion "tubes" rather than caps; the tubes were placed under the lock's plunger, or anvil. Then the hammer struck the the anvil which detonated the tube and directed a jet of flame through a "touch hole" in the barrel to ignite the main charge. This system ultimately proved unreliable compared to the percussion cap and a majority of Austria's carbines were converted to percussion in the late 1850's. These carbines were then purchased by both Northern and Southern purchasing agents. As a contingent of the North's purchase agreement, the guns were once again modernized for North American service with the addition of a ram rod channel drilled under the barrel and the installation of short steel ram rod.
This particular M1851 appears to have been among the guns purchased for use in the Civil War as it does feature a ram rod channel.
The stock is in great shape with some minor chips missing from the edges of the barrel channel, but no major damage that would compromise the gun's structural integrity.
The lock is in good shape with a solid half and full cock.
The barrel is full length and the bore is good with strong rifling and some minor scattered pitting throughout.
The furniture is all original; with the exception of the ram rod, which is a correct reproduction.
