Description
Pepperbox pistols were more popular in Europe than they were in America; as Americans generally regarded Sam Colt's revolver to be a superior pistol than the unusual multi-barreled, smoothbore pepperbox. Despite this, there was one firm that was quite successful in manufacturing and marketing pepperbox pistols - the Allen and Thurber company of Worcester, Massachusetts.
The company was formed when gunsmith Ethan Allen (1808-1871) partnered with his bother-in-law Thomas Thurber. Allen designed and patented the tube hammer pepperbox and the company would produce more of these guns than any other design during its 34 years in business.
This particular pepperbox was produced sometime between 1847 and 1854 based on "Allen and Thurber, Worcester" stamp found on its barrels. This production range is based on the fact that pre-1847 guns are also stamped "cast steel" while post 1854 guns are marked "Allen & Wheelock" after Allen dissolved the original partnership with Thomas Thurber.
It is full functional with a smooth, crisp action. The barrel assembly rotates reliably with every pull of the trigger. The double action hammer snaps crisply on each of the six nipples.
The .36 bores of each of the barrels are good - very shootable with no major rust or pitting.
The frame has some light pitting near the hammer and some decorative engraving. The grips are original and fit well and feature a high degree of original varnish; and the barrels feature most of their original factory bluing.
