Description
This M1842 is the rarest of all the '42 variants. This musket is one of the few that was produced under government contract by Benjamin Flagg of Millbury, Massachusetts. Flagg was the only private arms maker to receive a government contract to produce Model 1842 muskets. Historians aren't sure how many muskets Flagg produced but it is known that they were only produced for one year; 1849. William Glaze, the founder of the Palmetto Armory, purchased 660 muskets from Benjamin Flagg in 1849 and they were delivered to the state of South Carolina in 1850; meaning that most Flagg '42s have a very solid Confederate affiliation. Flagg eventually relocated his arsenal to South Carolina where he entered a partnership with Glaze to begin producing M1842 at the Palmetto Armory.
This particular piece was purchased from the collection of a closed-down museum in Virginia and it still has its museum ID number etched into the buttplate (see pictures). This musket is all original from top to bottom and is in good shape. The stock is solid with some handling marks and a little burnout behind the bolster. A faint cartouche is still visible on the lock panel. The barrel is full length and looks like it may have been lightly cleaned in some areas. The tang date is no longer visible but the VP and Eagle are still present and legible. The bore is in fair shape and is dirty but it doesn't appear to be badly pitted. The ramrod is original but is no doubt a field replacement as it is for a Rifled M1842.
The bands and furniture are in good shape and all match. Both the front and rear swivels are present but a little mutilated. The lock is in great shape. The stamps are all present and legible. The eagle is a little faint but still recognizable and the tail of the lock plate is deeply stamped "B FLAGG & CO/ MILLBURY 1849. The action is crisp and solid.
This piece is sure to be the pride of anyone's collection. Many Civil War enthusiasts have never even heard of the "Flagg '42", much less seen one!
