Here's an original an all complete British P1856 Carbine. These unique cavalry carbines featured a "captured" ramrod that swiveled on a pair of legs screwed to the barrel to allow for loading while on horseback; without the risk of dropping a ram rod in the process. These carbines were quite popular in the Confederacy with roughly 10,000 being imported by the South during the war.

While this is a true P1856 carbine, it is doubtful that it was imported for Civil War use, as it's "VR" cypher on the lock plate and War Department "WD" markings on the stock indicate that this carbine was built for the British Army; rather than export to the States. Still, this is a good example of a fairly rare weapon and may be a good choice for a reenactor or collector who wishes to own a P56 without shelling out thousands for a Confederate-marked piece.

Overall this carbine is in good shape. The hammer holds solid on both full and half cock, and the the stamps on the lock plate a crisp and legible.

The stock is full length and in good condition with no damage other than a few noticeable, but stable cracks found in the lock mortise, left portion of the wrist and the right hand side of the forestock (see photos).

The barrel is full length and the bore has no major pitting; but the rifling is faint.

The furniture is original; with the exception of the ram rod - which appears to be a replacement.
