This rare and desirable Pattern 1856 No. 2 "Bar-on-Band" Enfield rifle is in very good untouched attic condition. These iron mounted rifles are fairly scarce as manufacturing delays and an almost immediate update of the arm to the Pattern 1860 and 1861 Rifles after the arm was approved meant that the No. 2 rifle was produced in very small numbers compared to the other, better known Enfield Rifles. Despite the British military's abandonment of the "bar-on-band" rifle, the style was still produced for commercial sale on a limited bases by arms makers in both Birmingham and London. By the beginning of the Civil War, the pattern had been all but phased out of even commercial sale, but a number of guns were assembled from leftover parts and sold to the Confederacy in 1861.

This particular No. 2 rifle is all complete and original. It was made by "Potts & Hunt" of London. Potts & Hunt began producing military muskets exclusively for sale to America during the Civil War, and the firm was popular with both Northern and Southern purchasing agents; making this a true Civil War Enfield, and not a Middle Eastern or British Army surplus rifle.

The lock is in great shape with excellent Potts & Hunt stamps and a solid half and full cock. All the metal components are evenly patined, but all markings are crisp and legible. The barrel is full length with good proof marks and a dark bore with strong rifling that would likely clean up with a brass brush and some elbow grease

The stock is in nice condition with crisp edges. There is a small crack that runs through the front of the trigger plate mortise. The crack appears to be superficial as the stock is very sound with no wobble or other damage. Correct Potts & Hunt inspector's cartouches, as well as a period inventory number can be found on the belly of the stock below the trigger guard.

The furniture is all original; including the ram rod.
