Description
Center fire, rim fire, cap lock, flintlock, and.....matchlock! You've probably owned and/or fired a firearm from each of these first four categories, but most have never even handled, much less fired, a weapon from the last category-the crude but elegant match lock. That's why we are pleased to offer this completely American-made and historically accurate late 16th Century Spanish Match Lock "Arquebus".
If one had to pick a weapon that symbolized the "age of exploration" it would likely be the Matchlock Arquebus. This style of stock was developed by the Spanish in the mid 16th Century and quickly became most popular stock profile for just about all of the developed world, with the English, Dutch, and Italians all building some form of this style of stock by the early 17th Century. For this reason, this new completely custom-made matchlock would be appropriate for everything sort of early reenacting from the Coronado Expedition to Jamestown (in fact, a nearly identical matchlock arquebus caliver is on display in Jamestown's armory)
This match lock is completely hand made and in excellent condition, in fact it is in new condition and had only been test fired by the builder. The lock and all its components were hand-made and assembled. The stock was made from a blank, not a "pre-carve" kit, and was entirely fit and finished by hand. The tiller (trigger), pan, and pan cover were also completely made from scratch. The only component of this musket that wasn't made by the builder is the 42" .62 caliber smoothbore from Colerain.
At just over 58" long, the finished piece is an awesome replica of one of the gun's that literally helped to shape America as we know it today.
