Here's a great example of a well known, but seldom reproduced rifle. While most are aware of the famous half stock rifles built by Hawken in St. Louis, few are aware that the firm also offered full stock rifles as well. In fact, out of all the manufacturers currently reproducing Hawken rifles, not a single one offers a full stock rifle.
This rifle is a faithful reproduction of the famous Full Stock Hawken. It features all American-made parts and was completely custom made. The lock is one of L&R locks "Early Tennessee locks, which is a perfect historically accurate choice for an early Hawken. L&R has been producing excellent locks in American for nearly 50 years. Their locks are generally considered to be the gold standard among rifle builders as they are known for their reliability and astoundingly-fast lock time. This particular lock is in excellent condition, and features a beautiful historically accurate bone-charcoal color case hardened finish. Mechanically, the lock is excellent, holding nicely on full and half cock and sending a shower of sparks flying when the trigger is pulled.
The late-period lock combined with the rest of the gun's styling places it as a copy of a late 1820's era Hawken rifle. It is stocked in an good looking piece of lightly figured maple. The stock is very nicely shaped with only one or two minor handling marks and no cracks or splits. A very handsome patch box was inletted into the stock and was nicely browned.
The lock holds solid on both full and half cock, and ignition is provided by a set of double set triggers; also made by L&R. The locks function correctly allowing for the gun to be set off with the slightest twitch of a finger when the triggers are set.
The .54 caliber rifled barrel is another historically accurate feature, as many original Hawken rifles featured large caliber rifles capable of taking down large game. The bore is excellent with crisp rifling and no or rust or pitting.
The finishes are all excellent, including period correct bone charcoal color case hardening on the lock, breech tang, trigger guard and buttplate.
This completely custom, 100% American-made piece would be a fine addition to anyone's collection.
