This '42 defarb is fresh off the bench by Lodgewood's very own David Stavlo. We purchased this Armi Sport '42 from its original owner who bought it in the late 1990's. We immediately gave it to David for a complete overhaul and he did not disappoint!
David began by disassembling the entire musket and cleaning every part. He then stamped the lock plate with our new Harper's Ferry lock stamps. This is the first musket that we've been able to use our new stamps on and the results our absolutely beautiful; producing a marking that is an absolute perfect copy of the original Harper's Ferry stamp in both size and font.
He continued by stripping the stock before re-contouring the wrist, comb, butt stock and lock moldings to the dimensions of original '42s. He then re-finished the whole stock in a dark stain before sealing it with Linseed oil and Bee's Wax-the same finish applied to originals. Finally, David finished the stock work by stamping the correct Harper's Ferry "JAS" cartouche on the left lock panel. We are the only shop to offer the correct "JAS" cartouche on our Harper's Ferry defarbs. The finished stock is outstanding and now the stock looks nearly identical to an original.
David then turned his attention to the barrel. He filed the Italian Markings off the barrel and re-stamping the serial number on the barrel's underside. He then stamped the breech with Harper's Ferry's PB/B view mark (another one of our new stamps made off of a rubbing taken from an original Harper's Ferry '42). He also removed the oversized "1847" date stamp from the tang and re-stamped it with a correctly sized "1849".
A new brass front sight was then made and soldered onto the nosecap before being shaped to the correct height and width.
Finally, David installed period-correct taper pins in the swivels before lightly antiquing the whole musket. The result is a beautifully defarbed, semi-custom Harper's Ferry 1842.
This musket is in great shape both mechanically and cosmetically, but the bore does have some scattered pitting which may effect its accuracy. It would however, be a perfect candidate for a reenactor. Because of the minor pitting in the bore, we're selling this fully defarbed musket with loads of additional custom features for nearly the same cost as what a new, undefarbed M1842 sells for. Don't miss out on this screaming deal! We don't anticipate that it will last long!
