This '42 defarb is fresh off the bench by Lodgewood's very own David Stavlo. This Armi Sport Rifled '42 was purchased by its original owner in the late 1990's. He fired it occasionally but it mostly was a safe queen until it was sold to Lodgewood. We gave it to David for a complete overhaul and he did not disappoint!
David began by disassembling the entire musket and cleaning every part. He then installed the lock components on one our our custom-machined Harper's Ferry lock plates (that's right this plate is not a re-stamp, its a brand-new custom machined upgrade!)
He continued by stripping the stock before re-contouring the wrist, comb, butt stock and lock moldings to the dimensions of original '42s. He then re-finished the whole stock in a dark stain before sealing it with Linseed oil and Bee's Wax-the same finish applied to originals. Finally, David finished the stock work by stamping the correct Harper's Ferry "JAS" cartouche on the left lock panel. The finished stock is outstanding and now the stock looks nearly identical to an original.
David then turned his attention to the barrel. He filed the Italian Markings off the barrel and re-stamping the serial number on the barrel's underside. He then stamped the breech with Harper's Ferry's PB/B view mark (we had this stamp specifically made off of rubbing taken from original Harper's Ferry '42s.
When this musket was originally built by Armisport it featured a nosecap that did not have the correct rifled sight attached to it. David fixed this by making the correct-style rifled '42 sight and soldered it to the nosecap; just like originals. David was able to copy his sight from an original rifled '42 that we've got here in the shop so the finished work is nearly identical to the original.
Finally, David installed period-correct taper pins in the swivels and re-assembled the musket. The result is a beautifully defarbed, semi-custom Harper's Ferry 1842 which will shoot as good as it looks-the bore is near mint and the breech was glass-bedded by it's original owner to insure maximum accuracy.
This is the perfect musket for a reenactor or shooter. It's not often that we get the opportunity on our website, so don't wait-we don't expect this one to last very long. Be sure to click "IMAGE GALLERY" to view all the pictures. Additionally, click on the images themselves to zoom in.
