The M1898 Krag Carbine has the distinction of being both the last Krag built by Springfield and the last carbine designed specifically for cavalry use. The model was produced from 1898 until 1902; until it was replaced by the M1903.
In addition to the new made M1899's Springfield also updated roughly 10,000 M1898 carbines to the 1899 pattern
The 1899 Krag was also the only US cavalry carbine to be designed without a saddlebar, as the arm was meant to be carried in a scabbard.
This particular example is in excellent condition. It is all correct and original - an actual cavalry carbine; not a cut down rifle. It features a beautiful stock with no damage and beautifully crisp edges; indicating that it has never been sanded or refinished.
The Krag action was famously smooth and well made, and this gun is no exemption. The action of the bolt is smooth and crisp with no wear or damage to the lugs.
The magazine is intact and functional; with a crisp magazine spring.
The bluing is excellent with no rust and only a few light spots on the edges and corners.
The barrel is full length with an excellent bore - shiny with no rust or pitting.
