Description
Colt's Paterson revolver was literally the gun that "started it all" for one of America's most recognized name in firearms. The brainchild of Samuel Colt, the limited success of the Paterson helped launch Colt's Patent Firearms Co as the pre-eminent designers and manufacturers of single action revolvers of the 19th Century. Original Patersons routinely sell at auction for close to a $1,000,000, which is why Aldo Uberti began reproducing them in the 1980's for collectors and shooters who wanted to experience what its like to own and shoot "the first Colt". However, Uberti would soon discover the same thing that Sam Colt realized nearly 150 years prior: the delicate action of the Paterson required a lot of machining and even more hand fitting; making the replica guns, like the originals, expensive. As a result, both Uberti and subsequently Pietta, who also replicated the Paterson, only produced the gun in limited numbers before discontinuing them in 2008 and 2016 respectively. These limited production runs have made the replica Patersons almost as difficult to obtain as the originals guns. In fact, author Dennis Adler discusses replica Patersons in the Fall 2019 issue of
Guns of the Old West
Magazine in an article titled "Finding Colt Paterson Reproductions is Just As Hard As Originals".
We recieved this Uberti Paterson in new, unfired condition. It was then given to David Stavlo, Lodgewood's owner and gunsmith to "defarb" into a truly historically accurate replica. He began by carefully removing all the modern markings from the cylinder, frame and barrel. He then stamped the serial number on the cylinder and the bottom of the grip, which are the only locations where visible serial numbers can be found on original Patersons.
The bluing was then stripped from the gun and a light aging process was applied to the whole pistol. This worn finish gives the gun the look of a well cared for 180+ year ol original while allowing the gun's bore, chambers and mechanism to remain in new condition.
The process was finished with the antiquing of the grips. David re-shaped them to their correct dimensions before staining them dark sealing them with an oil finish.
The finished pistol is a near perfect copy of the original pistol that began Sam Colt's legacy, complete with correct serial numbers and devoid of any distracting modern markings. It's got the look of the originals but the bore of a reproduction. This is a great way to add a bit of "authenticity" to your pistol collection.
This is the ONLY way to obtain one of our defarbed pistols, as we are no longer offering defarbing services for customer-supplied guns. Don't wait on this one!
