Description
This fantastic M1863 Springfield is sure to be the pride of your collection. This beautiful musket is all original from top to bottom and the original bluing and color case hardened finish adorns the barrel barrel bands and lock.
This Springfield was built in early 1864 judging by it's 1864-dated barrel and 1863-dated lock. Guns with dates that are within one year of each other are considered to be "all correct"; especially guns made during years when the pattern was updated. The Model 1864 was approved in December of 1863 and was in full production during the second quarter of 1864. The simple reason the lock of this musket is earlier than the barrel date is the fact that Springfield used up all the locks made in late 1863 when producing the first M1864s. Its the same reason that there are 1857-dated Model 1855 muskets with model 1858 sights. like later models. It also features the later 1864 rear sight. These transitional models were created by the arsenal as one model was being phased out in favor of a more updated version and armorers attempted to use up the last of the old parts they had on hand before fully transitioning to the newer parts.
This musket is in absolutely fantastic condition. The stock is nearly perfect with two beautiful Springfield cartouches and a few handling marks with no splits, chips or rotten spots.
The 1863 dated lock is in beautiful, uncleaned and unmolested condition with beautiful color case hardening. All original internals provide a very smooth and positive action on both full and half cock.
The 1864 dated barrel is in excellent condition inside and out. The bore is very good featuring sharps rifling and no real rust or pitting to speak of. The sights are both original and in great condition. The breech stamps are all present, crisp, and legible.
The furniture is all original. The barrel bands maintain their original bluing with only a few minor scratches. The ramrod is original and full length. The armory bright trigger assembly and buttplate are beginning to patina-further evidenced that this musket has never been cleaned or refinished.
