This 5th Model Burnside is in good shape and is all original. The lock holds well on both full and half cock and the lock plate has good legible stamps and a nice patina. The breech block and the receiver have different serial numbers; which is fairly common among combat-issued Burnsides; as Union cavalrymen weren't as "precious" about keeping their carbines all "numbers-matching" as today's modern collector is. Luckily for us collectors, Burnsides are interchangeable, and it is obvious that this block has been mated to this carbine throughout the majority of the gun's life, as the patinas match perfectly. Additionally, the breech block functions as it should, with the block locking up nice and tight when closed. The sliding "nipple block" also moves freely; and is not frozen like so many Burnsides. Plus the fire channel is clear and one can blow air through the nipple; meaning this Burnside is ready for the firing range!

The barrel is in good condition with both front and rear sights intact and in good condition. The bore is fair with moderate scattered rust, but no major pitting. The rifling is very strong, and the bore would likely clean up to look better than it does now.

The stocks are sound with some handling marks and no major chips or dents and visible inspector's cartouches.

The hardware is all original and complete, including the saddle bar and ring.

This carbine would make for a great collectors piece, and given its excellent mechanical condition, could even be used as a shooter.
