Description
Very rarely do we have the opportunity to sell a Civil War era carbine that has as much obvious battle-usage and time-in-the-saddle as this one. This Gallager carbine is a very early production. It's four-digit serial number and early markings place its year of manufacture in 1862. The stock is in good shape with some minor dings and dents but no cracks or chips. The stock's most interesting feature is the tell-tale rub-marks on the left side that are made from spending countless hours attached to a Cavalry Sling Hook while slung over the shoulder of a mounted cavalryman. These distinct stock markings are one of the only sure-fire ways to determine whether a carbine was actually used in battle, or spent most of the war in a crate at some storage depot. Just one glance at the stock of this carbine reveals it to be a faithful battle rifle to some Union cavalryman. It's the very definition of what is meant by the phrase, "if this gun could talk..."
The metal components of this Gallager are in good shape. It is all original with the exception of a replacement saddle ring. The lock plate markings are very legible. The lock holds solid on both full and half cock. The lever is in good shape and latches positively. The barrel lock up is nice and tight with no wobble. Both front and rear sights are intact and in good shape. The barrel is full length with no pitting and much of its original blued finish remains intact. The bore is very good with some scattered pitting at the breech and very strong rifling throughout.
This carbine is a must for any collection. Few Civil War-era weapons tell the kind of story that this one does; and even fewer tell it for such a low price!
