Description
French Model 1822 Artillery Musket was a reduced size version of the standard infantry muskets. It featured a shorter barrel, slimmer stock and smaller caliber (about .66 cal). than the standard Model 1816/22 infantry musket. At about 8 pounds, the 1822 Artillery musket was a full pound-and-a-half lighter than the infantry musket; owing in no small part, to the fact that its shortened 36" barrel gave it an overall length of about 52" compared to the 56" length of its infantry counter part. Apart from its shorter and "daintier" dimensions, the 1822 Artillery musket was largely identical to the infantry muskets from which is was copied, both guns featured two barrel bands and a double strapped nosecap to retain their barrels (although the artillery musket utilized brass bands while the infantry musket's bands were iron). Sling swivels were mounted on a stud forward of the triggerguard and on the middle barrel band. Neither gun had a rear sight, but a blade front sight was casted into the from strap of the nose cap. The ramrod was trumpet shaped and a small lug for a socket bayonet was brazed under the barrel about 1 3/16” from the muzzle.
This particular model 1822 Artillery musket has an interesting story to tell. It appears that this musket originally began life as a standard Artillery musket, but at some point during its military service is was shortened to carbine length - the barrel was cut to 28" and the middle barrel band was eliminated. The nose cap and front band spring were then remounted and the bayonet lug was mounted to the muzzle. We have not been able to find any information regarding when this gun would have been converted in this way, but it is evident that the conversion work was performed by and arsenal; as the quality of the workmanship is top notch. Further evidence that this conversion took place while the gun was still in military service is the fact that the bayonet lug was remounted after the barrel was shortened. If this were a civilian alteration; there would have been no reason for a civilian owner to go through the trouble of insuring his hunting gun could mount a bayonet.
This musket remains in very good condition. It is still in its original flintlock configuration, although the cock is a reproduction.
The stock is in great shape with no major damage. The words "K68" are branded into the stock behind the triggerguard - this is likely an inventory number applied when the gun was shortened.
The lock functions well on both full and half cock. The frizzen spring is crisp. The markings on the lock plate are very legible but are written in the typical French "script" font and are difficult to make out.
The barrel shows a lot of use with a dark brown patina that matches the rest of the gun.
The bore shows quite a bit of use as well - the bore is very dark, and the muzzle has "thinned" from repeated ramming and cleaning.
