Description
This beautiful English double barrel shotgun was produced by Joseph Bourne & Sons; the same firm who produced P1853 Enfield muskets for export to America during the Civil War. Bourne produced fine sporting arms beginning in the 1850's and continued to produce shotguns in addition to Enfields during the war. After the war ended, the company shifted its focused to cartridge guns and became a popular choice for Sportsmen both in Europe and America.
This lightweight 12 gauge was produced sometime during the 1870's. It features typical English-style engraving with an a pointer and partridge on both of the locks. The hammers both hold solid on full and half cock, and both hammers are original; a rarity among 19th Century shotguns.
The stocks are made from lightly figured English walnut. This wood that this gun was made from is very hard; so hard that this gun was actually made without a buttplate. Instead checkering was cut into the butt of the shotgun to keep the gun from sliding around when shouldered. Stocks that lack butt plates are unique to English guns, and the style was eventually succeeded by the "skeletonized" heel and comb butt plates found on modern English double guns. The stocks are both in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. The checkering in the wrist is still very sharp and crisp. The forend insert is pewter.
The 30" barrels are "on face"; meaning the lock up nice and tight against the action with no wobble. The barrels and water table both bear Birmingham proofs; which is to be expected on a gun made by Birmingham-based Joseph Bourne. Much of the original twist pattern is still visible, and Bourne's hand engraved maker's mark is a bit faint but still legible on the top rib.
The bores are both very good - mostly shiny with minimal pitting at the breech areas, none of which seems to be very deep. This gun is from my own personal collection and I have shot it quite a bit with black powder shells. It's been a great "Dove Gun" over the years and should prove to be just as reliable for to its next owner.
