Description
The Austrian 1842 musket, a smoothbore weapon with a .70 caliber, was originally produced featuring a tube-lock ignition mechanism. This particular firearm is one of 25,000 units procured by the U.S. Ordnance Department from the firm Kruse, Drexel, and Schmidt. They were shipped in their tube-lock configuration for deployment within General John C. Fremont’s Department of the West. However, they arrived in the field without their required unique tube primers, as a previous shipment had accidentally exploded during transit due to improper handling. Consequently, approximately 8,000 of these weapons were subsequently dispatched to Frankfort Arsenal, where Henry Leman of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, performed a contracted modification using his patented breech conversion.
This particular Leman-converted 1842 Austrian musket in in great shape. It is all original and features a nice, unmolested patina.
The lock is in great shape and holds solid on both full and half cock.
The stock is in good condition with no cracks or damage, and no burnout or rotten spots behind the hammer. All the edges are crisp and sharp - a good indicator that the stock has never been sanded or refinished.
The barrel was shortened by about 1.5", but could easily bel stretched and relined by a barrel maker like Bob Hoyt or Dan Whitacre. The bore is good with some minor rust but no major pitting.
All the furniture is original. Both swivels are intact and movable. The ram rod is absent.
This musket is a great choice for collector or reenactor, bargain-priced at about half of the cost of a Pedersoli reproduction.
