Description
Here's a great, very usable Springfield M1840 that was arsenal-converted to percussion via the Belgian, or "cone-in-barrel" method.
The lock is in great shape with a nice, chocolate patina and good, legible stamps. The lock holds solid on both full and half cock.
The stock is in great shape with no cracks or splits. The lock panels are wonderfully sharp and the original inspectors cartouches are still present and legible.
The barrel is full length and features great stamps. The "bolster" around the nipple is in great shape, without any of the major pitting or erosion seen on other conversion muskets. The bore is good with some areas of scattered pitting.
All the furniture is original with the exception of a reproduction ram rod. This is a great, shootable conversion musket for a full $500 less than a Pedersoli M1816 reproduction
