Description
Here's a great example of America's last Single Shot Cavalry Pistol. The m1842 Cavalry pistol was the last standard issue single shot pistol issued to the US Cavalry before it was officially replaced with Colt's Patent Revolving Pistols in the late 1840's. These '42 martial pistols were made by two contractors: Aston and Johnson. This particular specimen is all original and was built by Johnson and the lock is excellently marked with good, legible stamps. The lock functions perfectly on both full and half cock.
Both the lock and barrel tang are dated 1853. The barrel also retains all of its original proof marks and sub-inspector stamps and there is almost no pitting anywhere. The bore is in good condition. It's dark but doesn't appear to be pitted. A little cleaning would do it wonders.
The captured ramrod is original and full length. the stock is in good shape with two legible cartouches and a small drying-crack in the left side lock panel that appears to be simply cosmetic.
This hand-cannon would be a great shooter or collector's piece.
