Savage Revolving Fire Arms Co, of Middletown. Connecticut, produced 25,520 muskets under the subcontract. The majority of these muskets were delivered to the Federal government while an unknown number were sold direct to state militias. This particular musket is one of the state militia-owned guns as evidenced by the New Jersey markings found on both the stock and breech. It seems that a majority of the state-owned Trenton muskets went to New Jersey, as a most surviving examples can be found with NJ stamps.
Like many issued muskets, this Trenton remains in very good condition. It is 100% percent correct with the exception of a modern replacement barrel made by Bob Hoyt. Hoyt's barrels are considered match grade, meaning that this musket would make a great reenacting or skirmishing weapon.
The lock is in great shape with good legible lock markings. The mechanics are perfect and the lock holds solid at both full and half cock.
The stock is well above average for a M1861. There are a two repaired cracks around the lock. One behind the hammer and another that extends about 4" in front of the front lock bolt. Both of these issues have been repaired with epoxy, meaning they shouldn't be an issue when shooting.
The barrel is was made by Bob Hoyt and fits the stock nicely. The bore is excellent with no rust or pitting and a set of reproduction "skirmisher's sights" have been installed.
The furniture is all original with the exception of the ramrod, which is a reproduction.
