Description
Here's a handsome looking Sharps percussion carbine. This Sharps is one of the few surviving guns that was left in its original percussion configuration and not converted after the war like most M1863's. It's 96,110 serial number with no "C" prefix indicates this is a true Civil War piece, manufactured sometime in late 1863. Furthermore, according to Springfield Research Service, this Sharps fits squarely in a shipment of guns (serial numbers 95,359 through 97,284) that was delivered to Company B of the 1st California Volunteer Cavalry.
It remains in excellent, all original condition, and is one of the few Sharps carbines to be left in its original percussion configuration and not converted after the war like most M1863's.
The stocks are in beautiful shape with no cracks, chips, or dents. All the edges of both the butt stock and forend are nice and sharp, indicating the wood was never sanded or refinished.
The metal components of this carbine are also in great shape with a good patined finish while all of the original stamps and markings remain crisp and legible. The lock fuctions flawlessly on both full and half cock. The lock plate stamps are all crisp and legible. The original "Lawrence Pellet Feeder" in the lock plate is intact and functional.
The block locks up nice and tight with no slop or play in the breech.
The barrel and bore are both in good shape. Both front and rear sights are original and functional; unmodified. The maker's stamps on the barrel are still present and legible. The bore is good with strong rifling only a few areas of very minor pitting near the breech.
All the hardware is original and matching with a great matching patina and no rust. No military rifle collection is complete without a Sharps and this carbine has such a great history. Its sure to spark many a conversation among your collecting friends.
