Here's a nice, original late model trapdoor rifle. This 45/70 is one of the rare "ramrod-bayonet" models. These rifles were among the last of the trapdoor rifles to be made a Springfield. They are identified by their unique bayonet that somewhat resembles a Phillip's-head screw driver.
This rifle is in good shape. The stock has a great, look and color; indicating that it was never re-finished. The original inspectors cartouche is still visible on the left side and belly of the stock.
The lock holds solid on all three positions. The lock plate has a nice patina with much of its original blued finish beginning to "plum". The lock plate stamps are crisp and legible.
The barrel is in good shape with no rust or pitting and nice plum colors throughout. A good, legible VP and EAGLE is stamped into the breech. The Buffington rear sight is intact and in good working order, and the original front sight is in great condition.
The bore is good with strong rifling and no major rust or pitting. The trap locks up tight and the extractor functions perfectly.
All the furniture is original and in good shape. The ramrod bayonet is in good condition and is still full length, with good threads on the end. The lock latch under the barrel holds the bayonet firmly in place.
