Description
This New England Militia musket was built as a result of Congress' Militia Act of 1808. It expanded on the Militia Act of 1792 which required every state to raise a Militia of every able bodied man aged 18 to 45 to defend its own territory when called upon. The new Act of 1808 allowed for Federal funds to be appropriated to each state in order to arm its militias with serviceable weapons. The Act gave no specifications as to the style of weapon; but did specify that the guns had to be .69 caliber and had to have a provision for a bayonet. The burden of producing the new arms would fall to private gunsmith firms; both large and small. The weapons they produced vary in quality; as many gunsmiths embellished their muskets with checkering or engraving in hopes of receiving larger state contracts.
This particular musket is very typical of the militia arms made in New England; particularly Massachusetts. Like most New England militia guns, it was built in the "Brown Bess-style" with a pinned barrel and brass furniture. The lock is marked "Boston". However, it's likely the musket was built by a gunsmith is one of Boston's surrounding counties; as most militia muskets utilized trade locks, making it likely the lock was mass produced by a large Boston-based manufacturer and shipped elsewhere to be stocked in a complete musket. The lock is in good condition and holds soldi on both full and half cock. The frizzen is in good shape and the frizzen spring is crisp.
The stock is in very good condition, and features typical New England-style "diamond-and-dot" checkering on the wrist. There are no cracks or splits anywhere.
The barrel is full length and bares a date of "1836" at the breech as well as a set of maker's initials. The bore is dark with scattered rust and pitting.
The furniture is all original; including the ram rod which is full length.
