Here's a handsome-looking model 1860 Spencer carbine with most of its original finish remaining. The stocks are in excellent shape.
There are none of the typical "drying cracks" like those found on most Spencers and the butt stock edges are all crisp and sharp. The forend is also in good shape with nice crisp edges. There are no cracks anywhere but there is a small chip missing from the bottom of the stock in front of the receiver. The magazine tube is original and in good condition and can be removed from the butt stock easily. The spring is present and functional. The butt stock swivel has been removed while the swivel plate has been stamped with "MASS 1630". There's no telling what this means, but it may have been a GAR Hall or a National Guard unit.
The receiver is in excellent shape. There is no rust or pitting anywhere. The right side of the receiver has a nice, smooth patina with a lot of color case hardening while the left side shows beautiful case hardening along with the saddle bar, and butt plate. The patent info has been largely peened over. This was done intentionally and appears to have been done by someone who was attempting to steal it from government service. The lock is in excellent condition with a some patina and a lot of case colors. The action is crisp and the hammer holds solid on both full and half cock. The action of the breech block is smooth and positive with all parts present and accounted for with case colors to match the receiver
The barrel bluing has turned to a smooth plum patina. The bore is in excellent shape with nice rifling. The rear sight is intact and in great shape with nice fire blue. The front sight is original and unmodified.
This is a great example of America's first repeater priced modestly to be attractive to any collector.
