Description
The Model 1842 has the distinction of being America's last smoothbore musket. This venerable .69 caliber was also the first universally interchangeable arm built by America's Federal arsenals of Springfield and Harper's Ferry. Because of it's interchangeability and robust design, the M1842 was issued in large number during the Civil War and was used heavily by both Federal and Confederate forces. But, how is the modern collector to know if a particular M1842 was actually used during the Civil War, or whether it sat in storage somewhere far away from the fighting? Well, for a majority of guns, one can never tell for sure. But, this particular M1842 has a very specific tell that proves it to be a legitimate Civil War relic: it is marked in two places with the word "OHIO" indicating that it was purchased by the state for militia troops early in the war. These state-marked guns are extremely rare, and Ohio is one of only a few states to "surcharge stamp" there muskets.
This M1842 Springfield that has a great patina without any of the excessive wear that is often associated with these early smoothbores.
It is is all original. The lock is marked very legibly with a mottled patina and no real pitting. The hammer holds solid on half and full cock. The barrel matches the lock in patina and condition and is still full length. There is some minor external pitting which is primarily limited to the breech. The VP and Eagle proofmarks and the 1848 date stamp have been re-stamped by a previous owner. The bore is good with some light scattered rust and pitting.
The stock is in great shape with nice crisp edges and great coloration. There is a small repair behind the hammer, and no cracks or splits anywhere. The "OHIO" surcharge markings are original and are still very visible on the wrist and counterpane. The inspector's cartouche has been re-stamped by a previous owner
The furniture is all original; including the ram rod; which is full length.
Includes with this musket is an M1842 Bayonet which fits the gun well and matches nicely in terms of condition.
This is a great piece with nice evidence of war time usage that's still in very usable condition.
This musket would be perfect for a Western theater impression, or an Ohio-based collector!
