This original M1855 Harper's Ferry Musket is about as honest as they come. All original from top to bottom, and with all correct Harper's Ferry parts-this is no parts gun! This '55 is in good shape with some heavy pitting on portions of the barrel and hammer. But, anything lacking in the condition of the hardware is more than made-up for in the condition of the stock. This musket sports a beautiful, unmolested stock with excellent, crisp lock panels and the sharp legible cartouches of both James A. Schaeffer (JAS), the head arms inspector at Harper's Ferry, and Samuel Byington (SB), who sub-inspected arms for the Harper's Ferry arsenal from 1854-1858. There are no major dings or dents and there are no cracks, chips, or burnouts anywhere.

The barrel is extensively pitted inside and out. Both front and rear sights are intact and unmodified. The breech retains all of its stamps, including a Harper's Ferry-specific VP and EAGLE as well as matching 1857 tang date. The hardware is original and matching with scattered pitting on all parts. The swivels are both intact and are both frozen and immobile.

The lock is in good shape and fully functional. The action is smooth and the lock up is positive on both full and half cock. The "Harper's Ferry" markings are a little faint but each letter is still legible when held in the right light. The priming system is functional.

Model 1855 muskets are rare and desirable in the collector's market and Harper's Ferry models are the "holy grail" for collectors. This musket has seem some heavy usage but is still in overall excellent condition making it more affordable for the average collector. This musket is sure to be an excellent addition to anyone's collection.
