Description

A cavalry carbine sling was a must-have for any mounted soldier, consisting of a wide leather belt worn over the left shoulder. By using a snap hook on a small roller bar, the trooper could clip into the carbine while tucking the muzzle into a leather socket on the saddle. This setup gave the soldier plenty of movement without the risk of dropping his weapon or accidentally leaving it behind on the horse when jumping off to fight on foot.

This particular sling is in great shape, still showing off a lot of its original finish. There’s some light crackling from the leather flexing over the years but no real damage.

What really makes this a standout piece for a collector is that it hasn't been messed with. You often see these shortened or cobbled back together because surplus dealers used to strip the brass off for scrap, but this one is totally original and still measures its full 56 inches. The buckle is attached the right way for a mid-to-late war piece—doubled over and secured with both rivets and stitching—and the belt tip has that specific "lip" on the edge you want to see on an original. To top it off, the snap hook is marked by North of New Haven, a well-known 1864 contractor, which puts this sling right in the heart of the Civil War.
