Description
Here's a wonderful Pennsylvania Long Rifle that dates between 1840 and 1860. This "full stocked" curly maple rifle is in excellent condition and is a good example of the "final evolution" of the famous Pennsylvania Rifle that became so synonymous with American sharpshooters during the War for Independence.
The styling of this rifle is very indicative of the Lancaster County school rifles rifles made during the mid 19th Century. These rifles feature long straight commercial barrels and simple "export" locks made in large manufacturing centers like Philadelphia. These "mass produced" components were combined with handmade furniture and stocked up in the traditional "long rifle" style by skilled gunsmiths in the Lancaster area.
This particular piece is an excellent example of a high quality Lancaster gun. It is all original with the exception of the ram rod; which is a replacement. This curly-maple stocked long rifle is in great shape. The stock was never refinished as indicated by the pronounced grain of the "tiger stripes" of the maple - running one's hand along the stock reveals the highs and lows of the curl's grain structure- a feature that takes almost a century to develop. The stock has no damage, other than a small repair near the top edge of the lock mortise (see photos).
The lock is marked "Philadelphia", and is undoubtedly a mass produced "commercial lock". Philadelphia was a "hub" for gun part manufacturers and components, including locks, from the area were exported all over the e United States, where they were purchased by frontier gunmakers for use in their own builds. The lock is very high quality and the hammer holds solid on full cock with no provision for a half cock (guns with set triggers have no half cock to avoid the sear catching on half cock when the lock is tripped).
A pair of handmade set triggers are neatly installed in the stock. The trigger function perfectly.
The .36 caliber rifled barrel features a faint, iillegible maker's name and measures a full 42" in length. The bore features some scattered light surface rust throughout but is the rifling is sharp - this original rifle would make for an excellent shooter! An original rifle for a price that's comparable to a Pedersoli reproduction!
