Description
Here's a great example of a relatively rare US musket. This original Model 1840 is in excellent, fireable condition. The M1840 has the distinction of being America's last flintlock musket and was later replaced by the M1842. These muskets were only made for four years and because of this they are relatively rare. These muskets were also among the first US Flintlocks to be converted to percussion, making original flint examples exceedingly rare. Even re-converted flintlocks, like this particular musket, are very desirable among collectors.
This musket is in great shape. The lock markings are partially obscured but overall very legible crisp and legible. The cock holds well on both half and full cock and the frizzen and frizzen spring are a good fit as well. The barrel is also in good condition and the reconversion work of plugging the bolster was done very well and blends almost seamlessly with the rest of the barrel. The barrel has a nice smooth finish and the proof marks at the breach are crisp and legible. The bore is dark and uncleaned.
The stock is in great shape with no cracks or splits, with only a few minor handling marks here and there. The lock moldings are nice and crisp; better than most M1840s.
The furniture is all original with the exception of an American made reproduction ramrod.
This musket would make a great collector's item. No collection of American smoothbores is complete without a M1840!
