Description
The Beaumont-Adams Revolver was originally conceived by London-based gunmaker Robert Adams. In 1851, Adams received a patent for a solid frame double action only revolver. This design was very strong as it featured a frame and barrel designed that was made from a single forging. While his double action only revolver was largely well-received, the long hard pull of the trigger that was required to both cock the hammer and advance the cylinder made accurate shooting difficult. This issues was addressed in late 1854 by Lt. Frederick Beaumont. Beaumont introduced a secondary sear into Adams original mechanism, which caught and held the hammer in full cock when manually drawn back. This allowed the revolver to operate in the same way as modern double action revolvers which can either be fired quickly by pulling the trigger to cock and fire the gun, or fired with more deliberate accuracy by manually cocking the hammer between shots.
Beaumont's improvements were added to Adams design in 1854, and the updated revolver became the Model 1854 revolver; however it is most known to collectors as the "Beaumont-Adams". These revolvers were produced by several firms; including Adams' own company Deane, Adams & Deane. After the partnership with Deane dissolved, Adams produced the guns under his own name for a brief period before moving production to the London Armoury Company.
In 1857, Massachusetts Arms secured a contract to supply 500 of the "belt" sized (.36 caliber) Beaumont-Adams Patent revolvers to the US Ordnance Department. Concurrently, the company developed and released a smaller, .31 caliber "pocket" variant of the belt revolver. This version was marketed to civilians as a more robust and safer alternative to the Colt M-1849 "Pocket" revolver. The Adams patent firearms offered quicker action due to their self-cocking, double-action mechanism and also featured a frame-mounted sliding safety on the right side. These attributes made the Mass Arms revolver more suitable for carrying in a trouser or coat pocket. With an overall length just under 8 inches for the 3 ½-inch barreled model, it was also somewhat more compact than the typical 4-inch Colt Pocket. Similar to its larger counterpart, the pocket revolver was a 5-shot percussion pistol with the characteristic hump-backed Adams-style checkered walnut grip. The .31 caliber octagonal barrel measured 3 ½ inches, though a very limited number were produced with 4-inch barrels. These revolvers incorporated loading levers on the left side of the frame, based on the Kerr patent rammer commonly found on most English Adams revolvers manufactured after the mid-1850s. Massachusetts Arms produced approximately 4,500 of these pocket revolvers between 1857 and 1861, at which point they ceased revolver production to focus on manufacturing carbines for the US Ordnance Department.
This particular .31 caliber Beaumont-Adams Pocket Revolver was manufactured by Massachusetts Arms and is in FINE condition. It is mechanically excellent, and functions perfectly on both double and single action.
Externally, this revolver retains about 90% of of its original vibrant bluing. It is all original with no damage to speak of. The grips are also excellent and in great shape with crisp, sharp checkering and no cracks, splits, or repairs.
All the gun's serial numbers match, and the bore and chambers are all very good; with no rust or pitting and excellent rifling.
