Description
This original Prussian Jaeger rifle was built sometime between 1810 and 1840. It features a robust 8 groove .69 caliber barrel with an adustable three leaf sight. These rifles were generally reserved for sharp shooter "scouts" who could move around the battlefield and pick off targets with with better accuracy than the typical soldier who was issued a smoothbore musket.
Originally built as a flintlock, these rifles were converted to percussion in Austria shortly before the American Civil War. Unlike most percussion conversions, in which all the flintlock components are removed and a new bolster and percussion hammer installed in their place, this alteration utilizes a new percussion hammer and bolster while a modified version of the original frizzen, pan and spring has been adapted into a "cap cover" safety; allowing the hammer to rest uncocked on top of a live cap without fearing that the gun may go off accidentally.
This rifle is in good shape. The stock is sound although is does have a few minor cracks in the forearm. Lock functions well and the hammer holds solid on both full and half cock. The frizzen spring safety is also in good working condition and not "mushroomed" from repeated dry firing; like other examples.
The barrel is full length and front and rear sights are intact and unmodified. The bore is good with sharp rifling and some scattered surface rust.
