There are few muskets that the modern day collector can say with any degree of certainty actually saw real combat. Sure, most M1861 muskets were issued to combat units but many of the contractor models were issued to homeguards, or to rear echelon support units who never saw much fighting. Some of the later-built guns never were never even issued! This is not the case with Springfield-built M1861s. As the premier arsenal not only in the United States, but most of the world. Nearly all of Springfield-built M1861 muskets were issued to front line combat troops as these were some of the few muskets that were being produced to government standards when the war broke out and they were about the only muskets available that the War department could count on to be of any predictable quality; the first government contracts for M1861 muskets given out to subcontractors weren't delivered until late 1862 to early 1863 and government inspector's subsequently spent most of the war butting heads with contractors who made muskets out of spec. This has caused 1861-dated Springfield muskets to be highly sought after by collectors; as they are one of the few military muskets with a real "been there, done that" history.

If your collection only has room for one rifle-musket, it would be hard to do better than this one. This particular musket is in very good condition and would make for a great investment.

The condition of this musket is excellent. All the major components have Springfield inspector's stamps as outlined by Claude Fuller's book The Rifle Musket; meaning this musket is all original and not assembled from parts. The lock is in great shape with no major rust or pitting and great, sharp markings. The hammer holds solid on both full and half cock with a wonderfully crisp action.

The stock is simply beautiful. The edges are nice and crisp and there are nor cracks or splits anywhere. The original Erskine S. Allin and Henry J. Hill inspector's cartouches are still very legible.

The barrel is full length with minimal rust and pitting. The VP and eagle stamps are legible as is the "1862" date on the breech. The bore is good with sharp rifling.

All the furniture is original and matching.

This fine musket is sure to be the pride and joy of anyone's collection. No collection is complete without a Springfield!
