The Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) operated as an extra-legal militia formed in 1912 to oppose the Home Rule Bill, which threatened the established order in Ulster. Because the UVF functioned outside of official government supply chains, the organization had to rely on clandestine and commercial networks to arm its members. They secured weapons through a variety of sources, including the Birmingham gun trade, private donations, and small-scale smuggling operations.
Among the more commonly encountered UVF-associated guns is the Martin-Enfield. It utilized the .303 caliber cartridge. As this was the same ammunition used by the standard British Lee-Enfield rifle, it simplified the logistical burden of equipping a paramilitary force with reliable, combat-ready hardware. Many surviving Martini-Enfield rifles associated with the UVF are identifiable by distinctive markings on the buttstock. These rifles often feature a stamped cartouche that includes a representation of the Red Hand of Ulster accompanied by the motto "For God and Ulster". While some of these firearms were original military surplus, evidence suggests that a significant number of the rifles bearing these specific "For God and Ulster" stamps were new-made for the UVF, reflecting the organization's commitment to equipping their ranks with specialized, identifiable arms.
This particular Martini-Enfield was among those purchased by the UVF, and features a good legible "Red Hand" cartouche stamped in the stock.
It remains in good condition with much of its original bluing intact and some salt-and-pepper pitting primarily isolated to the left side of the receiver.
Mechanically, the gun functions perfectly. The block fits tightly and the extractor is intact and functional. The .303 barrel is full length and the bore is good with sharp rifling and some minimal darkness in the grooves.
The stocks are excellent with no major cracks, chips or other damage.
