Description

Between 1848 and 1849 two contracts for 1000 weapons each was given to D. S. Nippes of Philadelphia for his Model 1840 muskets with the Maynard tape primer ignition system. This unique flintlock conversion musket featured an integrated self priming system that operated using Dr. Edward Maynard's "Tape Primers". While initial trials of these self priming conversion were promising, the mechanism ultimately proved to be too fragile for combat use and Nippes contract was not renewed after the firm completed the order for the original 1,000 muskets; making these guns extremely rare and sought after.

This musket is all complete and functional - a major rarity for Nippes converted guns. The maynard tape priming system functions correctly without a any broken or missing pieces. The lock also holds a solid half and full cock.

The stock is in great condition with no cracks or major chips; and nice crisp corners - indicating that the stock was never sanded or refinished.

The barrel is full length and has some pitting near the breech. The bore is fare is some scattered rust and pitting.

The furniture is all original; including the ram rod, which is full length.

Included with this weapon is original bayonet which fits the gun very well and makes for an excellent display!
