Description

This M1841 "Mississippi" rifle is all original and in good condition. This rifle was originally built by Robins & Lawrence in 1848. In 1861, it was one of 1600 that was altered by Grosz in New York for use in the Civil War. These alterations were simple; and included turning the last 4" of the muzzle down to accept a M1842 socket bayonet, and mounting a brass bladed front sight. Unlike many of the other M1841s that were altered for the war, the Grosz-altered guns were left in .54 caliber.

This particular musket is a great representative of the Grosz-altered guns. The stock is in good shape with no major cracks or chips and only minor burnout behind the hammer. There is a small age-crack that runs from the lock bolt up to the corner of the stock, but it only effects the stock cosmetically. The left side lock panel still retains the remnants of an original inspector's cartouche. The lock is in good working order and holds solid on both full and half cock. The lock plate has some very minor pitting but all the stamps are crisp and legible.

The barrel is fair. Their are no markings visible, but it is still full length with a nice patina. The rear sight dovetail has been filled in but the front sight is intact. The bayonet lug on the bottom of the barrel is missing. The bore was reamed smooth at some point; making this musket a great candidate for a reline.

All the furniture is original with the exception of a replacement front swivel.
