Description
Here's a very cool pistol rig. This Smith & Wesson Model 2 is being offered with an original holster made by Merwin & Hulbert. While the Merwin & Hulbert company is most typically associated with the revolvers that they manufactured during the late 19th Century, the firm also dealt shooting accessories between 1874 and 1876. Among their offerings were cartridge belts and a variety of holsters, including this flap holster made for the Smith & Wesson Model 2 Army.
The Smith & Wesson Model 2 Army revolver was an extremely popular personal defense revolver with over 77,000 made between 1861 and 1874. This .32 cal rimfire was a favorite among private-purchase item among soldiers on both sides of the Civil War who found it's quick-loading self-contained cartridges to be a distinct advantage on the battlefield. Even Mark Twain carried a Smith & Wesson rimfire revolver during his brief stint as an officer in the Confederate Army
This particular model 2 is in great shape with a pleasing grey patina. It is all original and functional and features a serial number of 14,833. This places its production date sometime in 1862, and its quite likely that this pistol was a "private purchase" self defense pistol bought by a soldier. The personalization on the barrel, "W.R.F. HETHERINGTON" would certainly indicate this, as the Model 2 was a very popular pocket pistol for soldiers and theft among camp was all too common. It's clear that "WRF Hetherington" had concerns over his pistol becoming "misplaced" and stamped his name on the barrel as a way to prove that he was the gun's rightful owner.
The action works perfectly and the cylinder locks up tight on full cock. This is some minor wobble between the barrel and frame; a common issue on original S&W tip-ups.
The rosewood grips are original and solid with a few chips missing from the edges.
The bore and chambers are good with strong rifling and some minor scattered surface rust and pitting throughout.
The Merwin & Hulbert flap holster which is included with the pistol is in excellent condition; the leather remaining supple and pliable with no major damage or dry rot. It is unclear whether the holster was purchased by "WRF Hetherington" in the 1870s after the war or whether the holster belonged to a subsequent owner; but one thing is for certain - the pair have been together for a VERY long time and we have no intention of separating them now!
