Description

Here's a great Starr carbine. These carbine were immensely popular during the war and generally well liked by the Union Cavalry. Originally built as percussion carbines, the design was changed in 1865 to accept a .52 caliber rimfire shell. Only 3,000 rimfire carbines were delivered before the war ended and the contract was cancelled, due to a lackluster performance in the 1865 carbine trials conducted by the U.S Army Trials Board.

This carbine is all original, but has been neatly converted from rimfire to center fire via a new firing pin. The stocks are in great shape with no cracks or splits and two very legible inspector's cartouches on the wrist.

The gun's metal components show some evidence of cleaning, but the markings on the lock are crisp and legible. The hammer holds solid on both half and full cock.

The mechanics of the breech block are nice and smooth. The block locks up solid with no wobble or play. The face of the block is in great shape with no major pitting.

The barrel is full length and all the markings are legible. Both the front and rear sights are original and in great shape.

The bore is good with very nice rifling and only a few areas of light pitting in the grooves near the breech.

This Starr would be a great shooter or collector's piece.
