Here's a rare piece of history. This "Remington Transformed Rifle Musket" was made from a Civil War era M1861 Springfield. On November 7, 1867, General A.B. Dyer, Chief of Ordnance, ordered 500 rolling block breech loading systems from Remington at $7.00 apiece. Nine days later Dyer ordered Springfield Armory to be prepared to receive these Remington Systems and use them to convert 500 Springfield rifle muskets to breechloaders. Remington convinced Dyer that they were better able to attach the 39" barrels to the systems than Springfield. Remington produced 504 barreled-actions which were completed in the spring of 1868 and shipped to Springfield Armory, where the conversions were completed. Remington also converted rifle muskets for the South Carolina National Guard building roughly 5,000 for the state. These conversion muskets utilized the original, butt stock, barrel and furniture of the M1861 Springfield, but combined them with a new action.

This particular musket is all original and with a little work, could be brought back to shootable condition. It features an untouched brown patina. The hammer moves freely, but the main spring is missing. The breech block and trigger are both frozen in place. The manufacturer's stamp on the tang is crisp and legible.

The stocks are good with some minor handling marks and one major chip near the butt plate tang. The barrel is full length and the bore is heavily pitted.
