Description
Very rarely do we have the opportunity to sell a Civil War era carbine that has as much obvious battle-usage and time-in-the-saddle as this one. This Gallagher carbine is a very early production. It's three-digit serial number and early markings place its year of manufacture in late 1861. The stock is in good shape with some minor dings and dents as well as a small chip missing from the front of the stock near the top of the lock plate. The initials "JMB" are carved into the left side of the stock. The stock's most interesting feature is the tell-tale rub-marks on the left side that are made from spending countless hours attached to a Cavalry Sling Hook while slung over the shoulder of a mounted cavalryman. These distinct stock markings are one of the only sure-fire ways to determine whether a carbine was actually used in battle, or spent most of the war in a crate at some storage depot. Just one glance at the stock of this carbine reveals it to be a faithful battle rifle to some Union cavalryman. It's the very definition of what is meant by the phrase, "if this gun could talk..."
The stock also has three "hash marks" on the comb. Many collectors consider these to be "kill" marks scratched into the stock by the original owner of the carbine in order to commemorate specific casualties he inflicted on the enemy. However, we will be the first to admit that these hash marks could have just as easily been applied by subsequent owners to signify the number of deer the carbine dispatched, or even the number or times it was used to fend off predators from a heard of livestock. Still, there's no denying that these markings were applied for some reason; and that reason is sure to be a topic of endless conversation between the carbine's new owner and his fellow collectors.
The metal components of this Gallagher are in good shape. The lock plate markings are faint, but legible. The lock holds solid on both full and half cock. The lever is in good shape and latches positively. The barrel lock up is nice and tight with no wobble. Both front and rear sights are intact and in good shape. The barrel is full length with no pitting. The bore is dark but with visible rifling. The front and rear trigger plate screws are both old replacements, but other than that this carbine is all complete and all original.
This carbine is a must for any collection. Few Civil War-era weapons tell the kind of story that this one does; and even fewer tell it for such a low price!
