This all original m1842 Springfield smoothbore is in fantastic condition.
The stock is excellent with great, crisp edges and an original inspector's cartouche. There are no splits, cracks or rotten spots anywhere. The only flaw is a small sliver of wood missing from the tang mortise, but this chip is very small and primarily hidden by the hammer.
The bore is excellent, shiny with no major pitting. We have personally shot this gun and can attest to its accuracy-wonderful groups were produced at 50 yds using 50 gr FFFG and a .678 diameter ball.
Externally, the rest of the furniture is in excellent, above average condition. The barrel retains all it's stamps including its original "1848" date stamp on the tang. There is no rust or pitting on the barrel or any of the external parts. The rest of the furniture is all original and all matching. Both front and rear swivels are present and movable.
The lock is dated 1848, matching the barrel. Internally, the lock is in immaculate condition with 98% of its original fire blue remaining on all internal lock surfaces. The lock functions flawlessly on both full and half cock with a nice crisp trigger pull.
This collector's grade 1842 would be a great addition to anyone's collection. Be sure to click "IMAGE GALLERY" to view all the pictures and addtionally, be sure to click on the images themselves to zoom in.
