M1847 Springfield Musketoon
This custom M1847 Springfield musketoon was completed by Steve Krolick. Steve built this rifle from parts made by the Rifle Shoppe in Oklahoma. The stock arrived as little more than a rough carved blank and Steve spend the majority of his time carefully shaping it and and correcting mistakes made by the stock carver; while the parts were rough castings that require polishing and filing to finish.
The lock is cast off of an original and was polished and fit by Steve. The barrel also arrived "finished" but needed to be re-filed and polished. The furniture was all rough cast and was filed and polished to its correct armory bright patina. The unique swivel rod and saddle bar both work perfectly, after taking a lot of adjustments to get right.
The stock was finished with a light stain and sealed with a hand-rubbed oil finish. One of our custom William A. Thornton cartouches was applied to the left side lock panel to copy the markings found on originals.
This M1847 musketoon is a very difficult kit to build as its stock is small and delicate and the geometry of its ramrod has to be exact in order to work correctly. However, Steve did an expert job with this one and it's ready to serve with the Dragoons.
