This early m1855 Springfield is in wonderful condition. All original from top to bottom, this musket is about as honest as they come with a riveted brass nosecap, original long range rear sight, and original model 1855 ramrod.
The stock is is in great shape with beautiful, crisp edges and no rotten spots, chips or cracks. All inspector's cartouches are still visible and legible.
The lock is dated 1858 and all stamps and markings are present and legibile. Production of the m1855 did not begin at the Springfield Armory until 1857 making this a very early example with a lock date of 1858. The functionality of the lock is flawless. The primer door is original and all primer parts are present and functional.
VP and EAGLE proof marks are visible on the barrel, but the barrel date is no longer visible due to light pitting around the bolster. The bore is excellent with good crisp rifling.
The 1858 lock date of this '55, combined with the fact that the barrel is outfitted with a a long range rear sight, making it the very last of the "first model" 1855s as the rear sight was changed to the short base 3 leaf style in mid-1858.
