Description
State-surcharged Confederate Enfields are considered to be among the rarest of Confederate arms. These muskets were purchased by state-appointed purchasing agents who were tasked with acquiring arms for their state armies during the Civil War. The task of arms procurement for the state of Georgia fell on Major Edward C. Anderson. Anderson purchased arms from numerous contractors in England including L.A.Co., Barnett and the BSAT. These Georgia-owned muskets can all be identified by the distinctive large letter "G" stamps found on their butt stocks.
This particular Georgia marked Enfield is in great condition. The stock is in good shape with various handling marks and a small drying crack running from the tail of the lock plate that is only cosmetic and does not effect the structural integrity of the stock. The Georgia "G" stamp is crisp and legible and stands out plainly against the light colored buttstock. This Confederate musket also has the famous Confederate enigmatic "JS/Anchor" marking stamped below its trigger guard.
The lock is in good shape with nice markings and a crisp half and full cock. the face of the hammer has some mild erosion from years of hard use. The barrel is full length and has legible proof marks with some pitting around the bolster. The bore has been reamed smooth and the rear sight was removed long ago.
The furniture is all original. The front barrel band has a broken screw but fits snugly on the stock. There is the remnant of a broken ramrod stuck in the ramrod channel.
This rare rifle is an excellent example of the quintessential Confederate Enfield. It is sure to be the pride and joy of even the most advanced collector's collection.
