Description
This original P1853 Enfield is so covered in in Confederate markings, you can almost hear it whistling Dixie!
This Southern inspected Enfield is in great shape. It is all original from top to bottom and features no less that three Confederate inspector's stamps. The most compelling of the Confederate markings is found on the barrel - a "type 3" "SHC" marking can be found clearly stamped on the breech. These markings were struck by the Confederacy's largest Purchasing agent, Sinclair, Hamilton and Co. As the South's major arms purchasing conduit the S.H.&Co, employed a whole team of "viewers" to inspect arms prior to shipment to North America. These viewers stamped the muskets principal components to approve them for shipment. It is these "viewmarks" that are the biggest indicator of arms purchased by the South; and Sinclair, Hamilton and Co.-marked guns are among the most desirable Confederate muskets to the modern day collector. The next C.S. marking can be found on the butt stock, just forward of the butt plate tang. An enigmatic Crown/SH/G3 is stamped faint but legible. The history behind these Crown/SH/G3 stamps is still unknown to collectors, but their provenance as Confederate-specific markings is well documented as these stamps only show up on Confederate-purchased Enfields. These stamps have often been attributed to Sinclair, Hamilton and Co.'s team of viewers. Considering the S.H.&Co was the South's largest purchasing firm, this evidence seems to be the most compelling. The last Confederate stamp is a script "JC" within an oval found on the left lock panel. These markings are always found in conjunction with the Crown/SH/G3 markings mentioned above. While the identity of this particular "JC" inspector is unknown it is considered to be a Confederate marking by Russ Pritchard Jr. in his fantastic book
The English Connection.
The lock is stamped "1862 Tower" indicating it is of Birmingham manufacture. The action of the lock is very smooth with a reliable half and full cock.
The barrel is full length and both front and rear sights are intact and unmodified. The bore was reamed smooth but feature minimal rust and not pitting.
The furniture is all original and matching; including the ramrod.
No collection is complete without a Confederate musket; and this rare Enfield is about as Southern as it gets!
