In January 1776, orders were sent to have 1000 rifles built for the British Army to confront the American Riflemen. These distinctive weapons were classified as the "Pattern 1776 Rifle" by the British Board of Ordnance. They were the first British Rifle to be used in America. There were 800 of these that were delivered through four Birmingham makers: William Grice, Mathias Barker, Galton & Sons and Benjamin Willets. There were 200 more delivered from Hanover. It has a 3 leaf rear sight and Jaeger styling. This rifle is a much over looked weapon used all during the Revolutionary War. It has far more historical significance than even the Ferguson Rifle as it was probably present at most all the conflicts during the war.
This handsome rifle is a perfect copy of the original "1776 Rifles". It features parts made from castings that were made off original 1776 Rifles. The rifle was assembled by the famous gunmaker Kit Ravenshear.
The stock is in beautiful shape. It was perfectly profiled and all the inletting is perfect; a real testament to Mr. Ravenshear's skill. The are no cracks or splits anywhere in the stock and only one or two minor handling marks here and there.
The lock features nice markings and throws a very hot, reliable spark. The cocks holds reliably on both full and half cock and the frizzen spring is nice and stout. A flash guard has been installed on the pan to allow the rifle to be used in reenacments. This flash guard can easily be removed for normal target shooting.
The barrel is in great shape and the fully rifled, .62 caliber bore features great rifling with no rust or pitting.
The furniture is in great shape and is fully functional - a rare feature among custom built 1776's. The captured ramrod is full length and works properly.
This is a great opportunity to own an expertly built piece of recreated history. This handsome rifle is sure to serve any task thrown at it. Whether it's sniping at "Yankee Doodle" on a reenactment battlefield or sniping at deer on the hunting ground, this rifle is sure to delight its new owner.
