Description
Here's a beautiful Type I M1854 Austrian Lorenz. It is in outstanding condition; and it's not exaggeration to say that this is the finest condition Lorenz that we've ever been able to offer. This rifle is all original and features a beautiful beechwood stock with no cracks or splits ( a rare feature for a Lorenz). Original Austrian inspector's stamps can be found in numerous places on the stock and the edges a crisp and defined; both indicators that the stock has never been sanded or refinished.
The lock is stamped 1859 and there is no rust or pitting anywhere. The hammer holds solid on both full and half cock.
The .54 caliber barrel is in fantastic condition inside and out. All proof marks are legible and struck deep including the barrel maker's stamp on the breech-another extreme rarity for an original Lorenz! Much of the barrel's original arsenal-browned finish remains and there is no pitting or major rust anywhere. The bore matches the rest of the rifle in terms of condition with wonderfully crisp rifling. As an added area of interest, this rifle features M1861 rear sight which was neatly installed in its original dovetail. Considering that it was a standard military sight that was installed, combined with the amount of modifications made to the sight base (roughly one hundred thousandths was machined from the bottom of the sight base before the dovetail was enlarged to fit the original slot in the barrel by way of a silver soldered steel insert) there is no doubt that the sight alteration was done for Civil War service and not the civilian market. In fact, I am aware of at least one other rifle which has a similar M1861 rear sight modification - a sporting rifle marked "J. WURFFLEIN, PHILAD". John Wurfflein received a government contract to alter and repair muskets for the war effort in early 1862, according to noted author John Moller. Ordnance records indicate that Wurfflein's firm was involved in the alteration and/or repair of more than 2,000 musket.
Based on these factors, the evidence certainly seems to attribute this sight modification to Wurfflein; although its unclear whether this alteration was done for Federal service or State issuance.
The furniture is all original and matching with each piece bearing the same #8 assembler's number. Both sling swivels are intact and movable.
This fantastic Lorenz is a true collector's item; both in terms of its condition and its unique sight alteration.
