Description
This fantastic Harper's Ferry M1842 is in wonderful condition and includes an original bayonet and original scabbard. This smoothbore is in all original and unmolested condition. All the parts match and are of Harper's Ferry Manufacture with the sub-inspector stamps to prove it. Harper's Ferry sub-inspector stamps can be found on the barrel (AW/P), the hammer and much of the furniture. This musket also features an 1849 dated lock and 1848 dated barrel which means it was most likely assembled by the arsenal in early 1849.
The stock is in fantastic condition with nice crisp edges and a great patina. There are no major cracks, chips or splits anywhere and no burn-out behind the hammer. The only stock cartouches are a single letter "T" and "Z" stamped forward of the trigger guard. There are no references to stocks marked in this manner in any of the collector's guide books, but the general consensus among collectors is that 1842's marked in this way were likely restocked by the Confederates at the Richmond Armory as other positively ID'd Confederate muskets have been identified with the same markings. Naturally, positive identification that these markings do belong to the Richmond Arsenal would drive the price of this musket much higher, but until such irrefutable proof is found we'll continue to list and price this gun for what it is-a nice honest Harper's Ferry with an unusually marked stock.
The lock is in great shape with good legible stamps and a smooth action. The hammer holds solid on both full and half cock. The furniture is all original and all matching with a great light brown patina evenly distributed on all metal parts. The ramrod is full length and both front and rear swivels are present and functional
The barrel is in excellent condition with great Harper's Ferry viewed and proofed marks and a legible date on the tang. The bore is untouched and dirty but with minimal rust and pitting.
Included with this musket is an original bayonet and scabbard. The bayonet is in good shape with a good smooth patina on the blade and some minor surface rust on the socket. The scabbard is in good shape. The leather is supple and not rotted and the maker's stamp is still visible.
