Description
The model 1740 "Potsdam" was Prussia's second standardized infantry musket. Developed for Fredrick the Great's army at the Potsdam arsenal in 1740; the M1740 musket was the standard issue musket in the Germanic states at the time of the American Revolutionary war. Subsequently they saw extensively use in the Colonies by German mercenary units including the famous Hessian and Brunswick units. Additionally, after several German units surrendered at the Battles of Trenton and Saratoga, the Continental Army found itself in possession of a large number of M1740 Prussian muskets, making the model a very well documented Revolutionary War musket. It is even featured prominently in the well known book,
Battle Weapons of the American Revolution
by George Neumann.
This particular musket is in good condition. It is all original and still in its original flint lock configuration (not a reconversion, like many other 18th century muskets). The lock holds solid on both half and full cock and the frizzen still throws a spark when the trigger is pulled.
The stock is good and has a minor repair at the top of the comb of the butt (see picture 2).
The barrel is full length and the bore is quite pitted and dark, there is a rust ring about two inches from the muzzle.
The furniture is all original and matching.
These Prussian muskets have been under appreciate as Revolutionary War collectibles. As a result they are much more affordable; commanding about a quarter of the price tag of a Brown Bess. Purchase this guns and hang it above your New England fire place.
